Don’t settle for limitations on your video sources or less than HD-quality video.
Everyone has heard the phrase “garbage in, garbage out.” Web-based streaming services have limitations with regards to the range of video sources they can accept. Since most services are built for very specific use cases, they are not equipped to support the wide range of capture devices used in enterprises today. As discussed in previous posts, video quality is also dependent on having sufficient bandwidth. Since service providers only have limited bandwidth capacity to serve a huge number of users, they cap the size of your video format and they cap the amount of bandwidth available to you. This may force you to use a webcam, instead of your gorgeous-quality telepresence system or broadcast-caliber camera. So, if your CEO is trying to stream a live, company-wide webcast using a webcam, the quality of the video will likely be negatively impacted and your CEO starts out looking bad, and it gets worse due to basic, low bitrate compression. Web-based streaming services simply are not optimized for quality video delivery in the enterprise and, therefore, you will never be able to get an HD video stream to the masses using internet video services.
Enterprises should look for a video platform that allows them to leverage the investments they already have made in their communications network and video conferencing equipment. With the right solution, delivering HD-quality, impressive webcasts to an unlimited number of viewers, wherever they are and on whatever device they are using, is highly achievable.
Even beyond large webcasts, enterprises can unleash the power of video throughout all functional areas within their organization to instill a culture of innovative communication and collaboration. The use of video is exploding all around us – so don’t settle for limitations on your video sources or less than HD-quality when you don’t have to.
